Progress on site at Belford Road

MLA have been working with AMA Homes since 2015 to redevelop a former 1980s office block and Edwardian former coach works at Belford Road in Dean Village. Sitting on the corner across from Belford Church, the development will create 45 new high-end apartments and three 4 bedroom townhouses, with beautiful views over Dean Village and back up towards the castle.

Unsuitable for residential development, Belford House has been demolished to make way for 34 of the luxury apartments, whilst Douglas House is being refurbished and extended to add another 14.

A Rich History – Sunbury & Belford Road

Steeped in history, the location between Sunbury & Dean Village, once a largely industrial area, is now a small neighbourhood of mews buildings lying between the Water of Leith and Belford Road.

The site sits across from Belford Church – listed Category B in 1965, this late Gothic red sandstone church is now a backpackers hostel – and runs along Belford Bridge; built by the engineers Blyth and Cunningham in 1885- 87 to carry Belford Road, part of the old road from Edinburgh to Queensferry, over the Water of Leith at the site of an old crossing at Bell’s Mills.

The corner of Belford Road where the new development will sit was once Sloan’s Garage which had a single storey art deco frontage, demolished in 1981.

Belford House, a tall brick building set back from Belford Road, was then built on the site of the garage to create extensive office accommodation.

The Redevelopment

MLA have worked with AMA Homes to design the residential development which will replace the office space, transforming the area and bringing life back to the site.

Significant groundworks to the existing Belford Road and Belford Bridge arches have been developed and installed over the past year.

The steel frame for the new build extension to the existing Douglas House is underway, following completion of ground works.
